Overview

Welcome to Malanda Primary School. We are a coeducational Prep to Year 6 facility with an enrolment of around mid 400's students. We are situated on the Atherton Tableland amidst World Heritage rainforest in tropical Far North Queensland. Our community is reliant upon agriculture and to a lesser extent the tourism industry. The ABS considers us 'outer regional'. We are committed to providing all students with a quality education. For us, quality is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skilled execution. It represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

We believe that relationships are central to our students' success and value the work that goes into building them. We are committed to preparing our students to become positive, active, resilient and productive Australian Citizens. Underpinning this commitment are the values of Honesty and Openness; Initiative; Diligence; Respect; and Supportiveness.

Our school prides itself on the warm and caring environment we have created here. After eight years of schooling at Malanda Primary our students are able to think, create, communicate, investigate, participate, and reflect. We work deliberately to improve the children's emotional resilience so that they are positive, have a realistic level of self-esteem, are able to solve problems, make informed decisions, are responsible and accountable for their actions and are able to get along with, others. As a result our students are happy and enjoy coming to school to learn. Classrooms are quiet and orderly places where students' learning needs are met.

We offer a comprehensive program founded upon the eight Key Learning Areas specified in the Australian Curriculum. English and Mathematics are our priority and comprise the core of the program. In addition, Science, SoSE, The Arts and Technology play a significant role in learning about our world. Our students are enthusiastic and achieve quality results in Health and Physical Education with a healthy percentage participating at district and regional levels. Music is taught to all students and some choose to study a wind, brass or percussion instrument. Students in Years 5 and 6 study Japanese as their LOTE (Language Other Than English).

Our students' NAPLAN results show they are capable learners. Our students relative gain is greater than 2/3 of the schools in our region, which means that our students learn more in 2 years here, than they would at other schools. In our focus area of Reading, our cohorts in Years 3 and 5 have bettered state and national improvement rates. This focus saw us achieve all objectives of the National Literacy and Numeracy partnership.

Our senior students participate in a variety of leadership programs annually. School and House Captains are elected by staff and Years 5 and 6 children. Student council representatives are elected by individual classes. School Captains participate in a leadership camp and follow up program run by staff of the Tinaroo Environmental Centre. All Year 6 students are eligible to participate in the senior leadership program that involves giving up personal time for the service of the school community.
